Our First Online Knit-Along: The Simple Top-Down Tee

Our First Online Knit-Along: The Simple Top-Down Tee

Every good knitting project starts with a little bit of yarn, a pattern, and the question: what should we make?

Back in June, Alpine Kneedles hosted its very first online knit-along (KAL), and we kicked things off with a project that felt perfect for summer: the Simple Top-Down Tee by Amanda Kaffka.

The KAL ran throughout June and July, giving us a couple of months to cast on, work through the pattern, troubleshoot along the way, and—most importantly—knit together.

What Is a Knit-Along?

If you've never joined a KAL before, a knit-along is exactly what it sounds like: a group of knitters working on the same project at the same time.

Everyone works at their own pace, but instead of knitting completely on your own, you have a place to share progress, ask questions, celebrate milestones, and see what everyone else is making.

Our KALs are online and open to anyone, so you don't have to live near the Alpine Kneedles studio to participate. Whether you're an experienced knitter or someone who just enjoys having a little extra motivation to finish a project, a KAL can make a solo knitting project feel much more social.

And that was exactly what I wanted to create with Alpine Kneedles.

Our First Project: The Simple Top-Down Tee

For our first KAL, we chose the Simple Top-Down Tee by Amanda Kaffka.

A lightweight knitted tee seemed like the perfect project for the beginning of summer. It was something practical that could actually be worn once finished, while still giving us plenty of time to enjoy the process.

The pattern is worked from the top down, which makes it a fun project to watch come together. There's something particularly satisfying about starting with a small section of knitting and gradually seeing it turn into an entire garment.

The Yarn: Estelle 50 Cotton Lux

For this KAL, we used Estelle 50 Cotton Lux, a cotton-rich yarn that was a great match for a lightweight summer sweater.

The yarn comes in a beautiful range of colours, which meant everyone could make their tee their own while still working from the same pattern.

One of my favourite things about doing a KAL is seeing how different the finished projects can look even when everyone starts with the same pattern. Change the colour, choose a different size, or simply knit with your own tension, and suddenly you've got something that feels completely yours.

June to July: Knitting Together Online

Our first KAL ran from June into July, and it was really exciting to see everyone's progress throughout those weeks.

There is something motivating about knowing that other people are working on the same project. Sometimes you need that little push to pick your project back up after a busy week. Other times, you just want somewhere to share the excitement when you finish a section you've been working on.

That's what I love about a KAL.

It's not really about who finishes first.

It's about having a reason to sit down with your knitting, chatting about what you're making, and enjoying the project alongside other people who understand why a pile of yarn can be such an exciting thing.

Why I Want to Keep Hosting KALs

Our first KAL was also the beginning of something I hope will become a regular part of the Alpine Kneedles community.

One of the things I love most about knitting and crochet is how easily they bring people together. You can be sitting in completely different places, working on completely different lives, and still have something as simple as a knitting project in common.

That's the community I'm hoping to build through Alpine Kneedles.

Future KALs will feature different patterns, different yarns, and different challenges. Some might be quick projects, while others may take us a few months. The projects will change, but the idea stays the same: pick up your needles and let's make something together.

Want to Join the Next KAL?

If you missed our first KAL, don't worry—you haven't missed your chance to knit along with us.

I'll be sharing upcoming KALs here on the Alpine Kneedles blog, along with the patterns we're making, recommended yarn, project details, and how to join the online knitting community.

You can also keep an eye on Alpine Kneedles for announcements about upcoming knit-alongs and new projects.

Whether you've been knitting for years or you're simply looking for your next project, I'd love to have you knit along with us.

And if our first KAL taught me anything, it's that a project is just a little more fun when you're not making it alone.

Happy knitting!
